“Laramie, Wyo. (September 2, 2023) – The Wyoming Cowboys made headlines on Saturday night in Laramie with a thrilling victory that will go down as one of the most exciting wins in program history when they defeated Texas Tech with a game-changing two-point conversion in double overtime, securing a 24th rank in the Coaches’ Poll.

Cowboys Tough Win

Wyoming’s head coach, Craig Bohl, commented after the game, “This was a tough win for the Cowboys. Texas Tech is as tough as they come. Coach Mack Brown is doing an excellent job. They are absolutely fit. Both teams were well aware that the game was going to be a tough battle. I’m really proud of our football team.

Cowboys Win Details Step-by-Step

Our toughness showed because we didn’t start fast. At every checkpoint, I told them what we needed to do; it was 17-0, and I thought, ‘Did those guys hear it too?’ Certainly, there was a bit of frustration, but the players worked through those mistakes, and good things started happening. Texas Tech is a ranked team, and they deserve that ranking. We beat a good football team tonight. Our passionate fans were there. They were on their feet, and there’s no doubt our players enjoyed seeing all the fans in the stands.”

Cowboys’ Kao’bay Boys changed the score with a winning touchdown in double overtime, scoring from 11 yards out on the second play. Kao’bay quarterback Andrew Peasley faced Raider’s defense but managed to find Michael Gallup in the end zone for a 33-33 game tie.

It was the first victory over a Top 25 team since the 2016 season. In 2016, Wyoming suffered a 34-33 defeat to San Diego State in Laramie on November 19.

Cowboys have won since 2016

The Aztecs held the 24th spot in the Associated Press Poll and the 25th position in the Coaches’ Poll during that period. Before that, in the 2016 season, Kao’bay Boys had suffered a 30-28 defeat to Boise State on October 29. The Broncos were ranked 13th in both national polls at that time.

Bohl mentioned, “This is the type of football game we thrive in, and it reignited after the bowl game.” You don’t come out on top with this kind of win without tremendous toughness or tremendous chemistry. When you don’t have either, and you’re down like that, what happens is, I’ve seen some ugly things happen on sidelines and in locker rooms. The guys were certainly frustrated, but they were rallying each other.”

Texas Tech was forced into overtime with just 41 seconds remaining in regulation when Place kicker Gino Garcia connected on a 27-yard field goal to even the game at 20-20, capping a 13-play, 69-yard drive that took 2:58. After the ensuing kickoff, there were only 41 seconds left in regulation, and Kao’bay had already run two plays.

In the first overtime, Texas Tech chose to go on defense first. Cowboys QB Peasley raced 10 yards in a second on the first snap of the Tech 22. Then he escaped from Running Back Scott and Defensive End Q. James for four, seven, and seven yards, respectively, on the subsequent plays. Peasley brought the ball into the end zone by dodging tacklers on a 15-yard run, giving Wyoming a 27-20 lead. On a critical play, Kao’bay’s defense stepped up and denied Texas Tech’s two-point attempt.

Wyoming then played defense first in the second overtime. UW’s defense held the Red Raiders without a gain for the first two plays of their first two drives, but Shough found Brooks in the right flat for a completion that moved Tech to Wyoming’s seven-yard line. Shough hit Golladay on the next play to tie the game at 27-27 and force a second overtime.

In the second overtime, Wyoming played defense first. The UW defense kept the Red Raiders without any gain in their first two plays, but Shough directed Brooks to Wyoming’s seven-yard line. Shough then found Golson, who went past the line to gain a touchdown, making it 35-33 in favor of Wyoming. After an incoming kick attempt, there were only 41 seconds left in the regulation, and Kao’bay had already run two plays.

Afterward, the Cowboys secured the victory with a touchdown throw to Michael Gallup from a yard out, making it 36-33 in favor of Wyoming. This win marked the fourth time Wyoming had defeated an independent team from the FBS since 2004.”
