BlizzCon 2023: Highlights and Exciting Reveals

Blizzard Entertainment’s BlizzCon has made a personal comeback after four years. BlizzCon 2023 is happening in Anaheim from November 3-4, but fans of the Blizzard universe can catch the live streams and shows from anywhere, thanks to the magic of the internet.

BlizzCon 2023 kicked off with a bang on Friday as Blizzard held the opening ceremony, a nearly two-hour event that promised “exciting reveals” for World of Warcraft, Diablo 4, Hearthstone, Warcraft Rumble, and Overwatch 2. Blizzard unveiled several new developments, including new heroes for Overwatch 2, the first expansion for Diablo 4, a stunning three-part expansion for World of Warcraft, and changes for World of Warcraft Classic.

Here’s everything that Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2023 so far:

Overwatch 2 New Hero (Samouan 16)

At BlizzCon 2023, Blizzard revealed the next hero for Overwatch 2, Samouan Tank Moga, on Friday. Moga is coming to Overwatch 2 in Season 8 of the Duel of Changgeng World Cup Free-to-Play Hero Shooter, but franchise fans can try it out later this week.

During BlizzCon 2023, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller also offered a glimpse of what’s coming next year in Overwatch 2, including a new PvP game mode called Clash, which he described as a five-point capture game mode. Clash reintroduces the returning map Hanamura, reimagined as a showdown map called Hanukkah.

Keller also promised an overhaul of the most critical in-game systems for Overwatch 2, with a return to a competitive play version and new competitive rewards. He teased upcoming seasons with themes, including Eldritch Horror, Egyptian Myth, Witches, and a Cosmic Mirror “where heroes become villains and villains become heroes.”

Finally, Keller teased two more heroes coming to Overwatch 2 in 2024: a new damage hero, Vincar, coming in Season 10, and a new support hero currently named “Space Ranger,” arriving in Season 12 at BlizzCon 2023.

Diablo 4 First Expansion, Vessel of Hatred

At BlizzCon 2023, between Diablo 4 Season 2, Blizzard announced Season 3, known as The Gauntlet, introducing a new weekly challenge dungeon under the same name.

But the most substantial news was the announcement at BlizzCon 2023 of Diablo 4’s first expansion, Vessel of Hatred, coming at the end of 2024. Diablo 4’s Production Director, Tiffany Watt, said that players would explore a new jungle region in the game, face off against the Mephisto once again, and gain access to “a new class brand never before seen in the Diablo universe.”

World of Warcraft Classic’s World

Executive Producer of World of Warcraft, Holly Longdale, revealed an exciting addition coming in 2024 for World of Warcraft Classic. It’s a “hardcore mode” to play, bringing a fresh experience to players. But the biggest addition to WoW Classic is the Cataclysm expansion, a fresh version that was originally launched in 2010, which will introduce changes based on player feedback, resurrecting old-world locations with new quests and class options.

In short, Longdale teased Season of Discovery for World of Warcraft Classic, featuring new secrets and class changes as “Vanilla WoW takes a heroic turn” for players, where players can become mage healers or tanking warlocks. The Season of Discovery commences on November 30th.

World of Warcraft’s Next Expansions

At BlizzCon 2023, Chris Metzen, the Executive Creative Director for the Warcraft universe, made a return to the BlizzCon stage to talk about the future of World of Warcraft. Metzen outlined a passionate project to chart the next two decades of World of Warcraft, starting with World’s End Saga. But this isn’t just one expansion; it’s three.

Metzen announced:

  1. World of Warcraft: War Within – Sending players underground to provide justice for the denizens of the Subterranean Dominion Empire.
  2. Warcraft Worlds – Midnight, a return to the old world, sending players to battle the cursed lands of Quel’thalas.
  3. World of Warcraft – The Last Titan – Venturing towards the frozen lands of Northrend, where players will uncover clues to an extensive conspiracy that spreads throughout the world’s history, revealing the true nature of the titans.

The first expansion for World of Warcraft: Worlds End Saga’s Trilogy, Warcraft Worlds: Midnight, is scheduled to release in 2024.

Hearthstone: Path of the Stone

Hearthstone’s Senior Game Designer, Cora Georgiou, showcased the trailer for “Showdown in the Badlands,” a new expansion set in the Wild West version of Azeroth, telling the original story of Reno Jackson and Elise Starseeker’s characters.

During this exciting BlizzCon 2023 presentation, Georgiou introduced a new way for Hearthstone players to acquire new cards – Catch-Up Packs that are “changing the way you collect cards in your collection,” allowing players to get up to 50 cards from one pack.

Hearthstone Battlegrounds is also getting a new mode called Battleground Duos, offering a new cooperative way to play.

Warcraft Rumble

Blizzard’s mobile action-packed strategy game set in the Warcraft universe, Azeroth, titled Warcraft Rumble, is now available. The game is set to return to their real-time strategy roots and is coming out soon.
